Police asks residents to help protect their homes after recent break-and-enters

Update 2024-03-06: Comox Valley RCMP investigators would like to update and warn the public that the suspects appear to be targeting residences of Asian-owned businesses where high-value items are being stolen. Investigators believe that those residences are being targeted with a prior visit from the culprit(s) to see if anyone is home. In the event that the suspects encounter the homeowner, they may mention that they are at the wrong house, says Cst. Holly Carlson of the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit. We encourage homeowners to contact police right away if that happens.

As a result of three recent residential break and enters targeting cash and valuables, the Comox Valley RCMP is reminding the public to remain vigilant to safeguard their belongings and are offering tips on how to better protect themselves.

On February 24, 2024, police responded to a break and enter in the 1100 block of Hornby Pl, Courtenay, BC.
On February 28, 2024, police responded to a break and enter in the 700 Block of Aspen Rd, Comox, BC.
On March 1, 2024, police responded to a break and enter in the 1700 Block of Thorpe Ave, Courtenay, BC.

Those incidents remain actively under investigation, including whether or not there is a connection between them.

The Comox Valley RCMP is asking for the publics assistance to review residential CCTV video and report any suspicious activity right away.

Tips to help keep your home secure:

While on vacation, arrange for someone to shovel/mow the lawn and park in your driveway. It’s ideal to have someone you trust, house-sit for you so your home is still lived in while you are away. If this is not possible, make sure your home looks lived in.
Make sure your house number is visible during the day and night. In an emergency, you want emergency crews to find your house number as soon as possible.
Use timers on indoor lights and tamper-proof, motion sensor lights around the perimeter of your home. Lighting is the most effective crime prevention tool, since criminals do not want to be seen.
Install a door viewer so you know who is at your door before you open it. Know who is there before you open your door and home to a stranger.
Consider installing a doorbell camera. Along with the added security footage, this would allow you to see who is at your door and even speak to them remotely.
