It’s that time of year again…when Mission RCMP go wild! Our communities are filled with all sorts of wonderful wilderness areas, and it’s always great to see how many people get out and enjoy all that the area has to offer. Here are a few reminders if you’re heading into the backcountry:
- Prepare for the unexpected: if your vehicle breaks down on a Forest Service Road, or your boat loses power at the far end of Stave Lake, do you have adequate supplies to stay longer than expected while waiting for help?
- Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back: even a short hike can be quickly derailed by a twisted ankle or a wrong turn, and many wilderness areas do not have cell coverage. If you don’t return home, will someone know to call for help?
- Impaired driving is illegal even on Forest Service Roads, and impaired boating is also against the law. Mission RCMP will be out in all of these areas, checking drivers for sobriety both on the pavement and off.
- If you are planning on doing recreational shooting in the wilderness, ensure you are doing so safely and lawfully. The Fraser Valley Regional District has a map showing locations closed to shooting around Mission. Police regularly receive reports of illegal shooting in areas near Stave Lake and north of Sylvester Road (gun-shots are loud, and people hear and report them from a long way-off!).
Finally, if you see someone driving dangerously, boating dangerously, or otherwise acting in an unsafe manner, regardless of whether it’s in town or out in the wilderness, please call 911. Let’s make sure everyone has a great spring and summer this year – we’ll see you out there!
